From Revising History to Guilty Pleasures to Brushes With Greatness, the Bad Penny has had no shortage of new features as of late. But in deciding to blaze a less-traveled path, Lily Chapin of the Chapin Sisters – who have been performing live as part of She & Him’s ensemble, and opening for them too – has come up with an impressive one of her own: “Best Songs to Get Dressed To.” Here’s the list she compiled; fans of Scott Walker, the Zombies and Nico, look no further. Posted in Features, Guilty Pleasures, Interviews with tags , on 10/11/2010 by Kurt Orzeck

Cheers to Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants for sending along the second submission to the Bad Penny’s new “Guilty Pleasures” series. He took a bit of an abstract approach to the task, mostly naming general concepts instead of specific temptations (aside from fish and chips). Continue reading →

The Bad Penny has had a hell of a week. From exclusives courtesy of the Pinx and ex-Red House Painters/ current Desertshore guitarist Phil Carney to creative feature submissions crafted by Mike Watt, Kathryn Williams, Humanfly and Campfire OK, there’s been plenty to munch on. As if that weren’t enough, here’s yet another Bad Penny exclusive, coupled with yet another new Bad Penny feature. Equally cool, this piece – Brushes With Greatness – was actually conceived by, not proposed to, the musician in question: Expo’s John Lane. Continue reading →

Post-hardcore prog-metallers Humanfly are drumming up some sick praise with their third record, Darker Later (Brew). Kerrang! bestowed five Ks on the slab, which arrives Stateside on November 9, and Terrorizer and Rocksound have been eating it up too. In anticipation of the release, the Bad Penny got frontman John Sutcliffe to lay down his guard for Guilty Pleasures, a new feature. Jaws may drop as the Leeds lad reveals a handful of artists you’d never guess he’d be into. Continue reading →

It’s all geek to Campfire OK’s Mychael. For the second installment in the Bad Penny’s “What You Readin’ For?” series, the singer of the Seattle indie-pop band leafs through two books: a nonfiction classic about science and a classic work of science fiction.

On Tyranny: Orphaned Land Find Faith in Metal as They Push for Middle East Peace

The Bad Penny published this transgressive – perhaps even transcendental – article in December 2010. Given the social and political upheaval happening in the U.S., Orphaned Land’s place of residence, and the Middle East, we hope Bad Penny readers might value the viewpoints that the musicians shared from their heart 16 years ago. Metalheads are fickle when it comes to approving a band’s metal cred. But it’s safe to say that your group qualifies if: 1) Fans can get arrested for listening to you; 2) You get arrested trying to record an album; and 3) You preach a message so radical that it makes some metalheads cringe.

Enter Orphaned Land, a metal band from Israel that meets all those criteria.
