The Giving Tree(fort): Boise’s Bountiful Fest

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 03/29/2024 by korzeck

Last weekend, Boise’s annual Treefort Music Fest featured one of its weakest rosters of artists in the history of the event. But neither the anemic bill nor the dicey weather deterred local music lovers from checking out live sets across the modest city.

Read the most comprehensive history yet of Treefort Music Fest in the just-released April edition of Boise Lifestyle, one of the last glossy magazines left in Idaho. (Or peruse the online version of the story here.) Also, don’t miss New Noise Magazine profiles of 2024 Treefort participants A Place to Bury Strangers, Ex Everything, So Pitted, Sistemas Inestables and French Cassettes.

Treefort Fest 2024 Friday Pick: Ex Everything Bring The Noise

My New Noise series profiling the crem de la crem of this year’s Treefort Music Fest crop continues with Ex Everything. Possibly the heaviest entrant in this year’s edition, they’re also among the kindest, particularly in the case of amiable guitarist Jon Howell. Here’s our conversation for proof:

Treefort Music Fest, which kicked off its five-day stretch yesterday—and can always use a juicy jolt of excitement once attendees get comfortable (or tired). French Cassettes have steam shooting out of their ears not only because of the promising event that is Treefort—but because the band has a new LP on the way too.

With Treefort Music Fest less than two months away, indie-rock fans flocking to Boise can breathe a collective sigh of relief: Legendary artist Mary Timony is, indeed, still on the bill.

Best known as the leader of Helium, the dreamy Boston trio that served as a staple of Matador Records’ roster in the ’90s, Timony is one of the main draws at this year’s edition of the five-day event. Treefort will take place from March 20 to 24 at various venues throughout the growing city.

Treefort 2023 Profile: Rogê

Posted in Interviews with tags , on 03/22/2023 by korzeck

Don’t know how to start off your Treefort Music Fest 2023 experience? Not totally sold on Dinosaur Jr.’s old-school indie-rock, Covet’s “emotional nerd rock” or Old 97’s classic alt-country? You can always “go Rogê” tonight (and tomorrow) with some funky samba from Rio de Janeiro.

We had the good fortune of touching base with Rogê, the crown heir of the Brazilian Popular Music movement shortly before he arrived in Boise. Rogê just finished opening for collaborator Jack Johnson on some dates in Brazil and is also coming off seven shows at South by Southwest.

Rogê is the 22nd artist to participate in the Bad Penny’s ongoing series profiling international artists coming to Boise to play the state’s best and brightest music festival, Treefort.

Rogê will have the spotlight pretty much all to himself tonight, as the festival gets underway with its first evening. That show will build momentum for Rogê’s second concert, tomorrow at Bandshell at 7:40 p.m. Here’s what he is most looking forward to with both shows.

Tig Notaro’s Second Show at Treefort: Tix On Sale Tomorrow

Posted in Comedy with tags , , on 02/23/2023 by korzeck

One of the biggest acts to anchor this year’s edition of Treefort Music Fest in Boise isn’t even a musician.

Headlining Comedyfort, the self-described offshoot of the March extravaganza, is Tig Notaro. The veteran entertainer started performing more than 20 years ago and is now one of the most talked-about comedians in the U.S.

To wit, the Notaro performance scheduled for Comedyfort — specifically, at the Egyptian Theatre on March 25 at 8 p.m. — sold out quickly. Earlier this week, organizers announced a second show; they told the Bad Penny that it will happen on the same evening at 10:30 p.m.
