Breaking the third wall here a bit, if there still is one …

Over the course of my 30 years as a music journalist, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters are among the top five bands about which I’ve written the most. I still rank QOTSA as my third-favorite band of all time (Nirvana and the Jesus Lizard will probably forever occupy those #1 and #2 spots, respectively). And I continue to regard Dave Grohl as my ultimate rock idol, it gives me no pleasure to report that the new QOTSA record, Perfecth (due October 30), is – from the few spins I’ve given it thus far – not just the worst record in the band’s catalog, by a long shot, it’s utterly perplexing that the band would even put its name on it.

The new Foo Fighters album, Your Favorite Toy, managed to achieve epic levels of disappointment upon its release in April. The band rightly gained enormous respect for performing three-hour shows and incredible feats of strength like continuing tours despite serious physical injury. The record’s weak, limp, rote, paint-by-numbers and ultimately unfeeling personality was a blatant case of bloated mega-popular rock band mailing in their latest effort.

But Foo friends QOTSA might have even hit a lower bottom with Perfecth. Stay tuned for my review in the next issue of The Big Takeover – and, equally important, count down the days till Perfecth becomes available next month at your own peril. Even your lowest expectations will not prepare you for the jaw-droppingly dull, uneventful, vapid album that Josh Homme and crew have crapped out.
