Creativity is the driving force in the musical works created by Boise rock musician Tyler Schlagenhauf of Mylo Bybee. He recently checked in with The Bad Penny to talk about Trump’s Authoritarian America and the fear that is sweeping across the country (and even the world). Schlagenhauf shares one of the more positive outlooks in The Bad Penny‘s On Tyranny series. “My North Star is that It can’t get to the point where it’s crushing artists’ creativity, because it is that outlet that we’ve seen over and over again can bring people together,” he says.

On Tyranny: Mylo Bybee Frontman Insists ‘We Won’t Let Fascism Crush Creativity’

Posted in Essays, News, Videos with tags authoritarianism, Bad Bunny, fascism, ICE, immigration, Lady Gaga, On Tyranny, racism, trump, tyranny on 02/09/2026 by Kurt OrzeckOccasionally in our On Tyranny series, we deviate from our normal routing of interviewing musicians on the topics of Trump’s tyrannical regime and the ghastly horrors spewing from it like the 1989’s Exxon Valdez oil spill. We do so in order to demonstrate that the tireless efforts of protestors – the textbook definition of unsung heroes – are succeeding tremendously in their efforts to force the corporate media to increase coverage of the resistance’s war against fascism.
Another way the mainstream (let’s be generous and call them unaware) is finding it very difficult to block out or deny Trump’s reign of terror is when famous people join the resistance by proudly speaking out in public, threats of retaliation from Donald “I am your retribution” by damned.
With that in mind, we found it imperative to publish our third post about Bad Bunny, even if he isn’t returning our phone calls. How rude, especially considering that Bad Bunny copped his moniker from our The Bad Penny! And yet how seismically important it was for the Puerto Rican rapper to cancel plans to tour the U.S. due to safety concerns.

Posted in Features, Interviews, On Tyranny, On Tyranny, Videos with tags authoritarianism, fascism, Jesus Christ Taxi Driver, On Tyranny, trump, tyranny on 02/06/2026 by Kurt OrzeckDenver’s Jesus Christ Taxi Driver isn’t just a band with one of the best monikers in the music universe – they’re also dead serious about resisting the Trump administration and MAGA’s destruction of American values, the federal government and even the country itself. But as The Bad Penny learned in an interview conducted just two days ago, the punk-rock band believes humor might the best response to America’s transformation into a fascist country.

In addition to chatting us up, INDECLINE shared a list of essential reads for those currently fighting fascism or are curious about the war being waged across the globe.

Now it’s looking like we’re going to have martial law.
Earlier today, Gail Swanson – a cool, collected but also furious folk artist – participated in The Bad Penny’s tragically ongoing series called On Tyranny. As has been the case with almost every edition we publish, it seems like the Trump administration and MAGA have just terrorized or are about to terrorize the American populace with a calamity, catastrophe or cataclysm that may take decades, centuries or even longer to repair.
But while the majority of us seem to be in despair over our powerlessness, not just over the fascist regime that now rules over us, Swanson is refusing to give in to hopelessness and galvanize herself into action more than ever before.

Posted in Features, Interviews, On Tyranny, On Tyranny with tags authoritarianism, Cursive, fascism, Indecline, MAGA, On Tyranny, tyranny on 01/12/2026 by Kurt OrzeckThe Bad Penny is embarrassed to admit that we only discovered INDECLINE, an American Anarchist art collective whose work has had tremendous impact on the underground and even the mainstream, for more than 20 years. We caught wind of the group, whose members wish to remain anonymous, after they collaborated with Cursive for their video “The Avalanche of Our Demise,” which the Tim Kasher-led indie-rock band released last month. Upon further investigation into INDECLINE, it became obvious that they would be a boon to On Tyranny, for they would certainly introduce new ideas and perspectives in the series we launched roughly a year ago.
And boy did they ever. Formed in 2001, the decentralized group of musicians, graffiti artists and others have fearlessly devoted themselves to bringing attention to the evils of capitalism, the death of democracy in America – and, on a more positive note, how we can build a better society. INDECLINE’s most prominent works of public art include statues of Donald Trump in the buff, glued to sidewalks; and their “Ku Klux Klowns” installation that served as a response to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.
We could expound a great deal further on INDECLINE’s history and accomplishments, but much of that information is covered in the longest, boldest and most informative installment in our On Tyranny series. So, without further ado, here is the epic conversation

The more we educated ourselves on those values the more we realized that we were being indoctrinated to believe that Israel is the sole protagonist in this conflict and that any other opinion is a betrayal.”

As regular or even semi-regular browsers of The Bad Penny‘s On Tyranny series may have noticed, we tend to shy away from presenting interviews with participating artists in text form. That’s principally due to the sensitive nature of the series’ overarching theme – how fascism and authoritarianism directly damage musicians and other artists both professionally and personally. Typically, we opt for video, as that artistic medium captures the seriousness and emotional intensity of the subject more powerfully than written accounts.
Enter The Crotches. Germinated and anchored by three brothers, the Tel Aviv garage-punk band departed from their home country roughly two years ago and settled in Las Vegas.
The punk squad – who were conscripted to serve in Israel’s military – made the tough decision to leave in large part because of immoral actions taken by the Israeli government, which is controlled by war criminal and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with his Likud Party. Additionally, the musicians are anti-Zionist.
What follows is the entirety of The Bad Penny‘s conversation with Crotches frontman/vocalist Alonzo and guitarist Amitkes, who answered our questions in tandem – and with a truly admirable degree of transparency and courage.

He recently participated in The Bad Penny‘s On Tyranny series for a conversation about Idaho 50501’s efforts to push back against ICE, galvanize local organizations under common causes (rejecting fascism among them) — and why the music community in Boise and beyond is instrumental (pun intended) in fighting back against Trump’s authoritarian takeover.

The legendary Thalia Zedek’s influence on alternative music through her groups Uzi, Live Skull and Come cannot be overstated. Additionally, a long-lost EP by another one of her projects, Via, finally saw the light of day courtesy of Dromedary Records.
This week, Zedek became the highest-profile artist yet to participate in “On Tyranny.” She talks about how she is taking action to fight the attack on democracy by Trump and corporations; how she fears for the safety of Ethiopian poet Mihret Kebede, with whom she has collaborated; and why drastic moves like foreign artists refusing to tour the United States until the country rights itself should be on the table.

Posted in Interviews, Lists, News, On Tyranny, On Tyranny with tags authoritarianism, fascism, Marios Iliopoulos, Nightrage, On Tyranny, trump, tyranny on 12/18/2025 by Kurt OrzeckLittle did The Bad Penny expect that a feature called “The 20 Best Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal Bands of All Time” that we published five days ago would become the most popular post in the history of this 15-year-old website in its entire existence. But that’s exactly what the headbangers ordered, and it’s spurring us to run some spinoff articles about bands made the cut on the list but that we’ve never had the pleasure of interviewing.
Reaching out to the bands on the list that aren’t as popular as your In Flames, Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquillity, we were reminded that Gothenburg is the historic city that birthed more than just three MDM bands. Nightrage guitarist Marios Iliopoulos said he was both flattered to be recognized and that their artistic output is just as strong as many of the other bands included on the rundown.
