Top 10 Best Norwegian Metal Bands, According to Homegrown Heathens Horrifier

Welcome back to The Bad Penny Passport, in which we check in with musicians around the world to pick their brain about what they consider to be the best bands in their homeland. Today we land in Norway, one of the most potent oases of extreme metal on the globe, so it couldn’t be more fitting that we’re letting death-metal luminaries Horrifier do the honors.

The band is still in the proverbial cradle, having only plopped out of Norway’s womb four years ago. Weaned on Autopsy, Entombed, Repulsion and other death-metal deacons, Horrifier proved their loyalty to old-school death metal with their 2022 demo, Howl From the Grave; and first full-length, the following year’s Horrid Resurrection.

Horrifier then showed that they’re the real deal with the follow-up Revelations of Gore, which came out in August on Mexico-based Personal Records. Not to be overlooked as metalheads begin piecing together their year-end top 10 lists, the record is a panoply of putridity. The band comes into its own this time around, with a delivery that alternates between lumbering bludgeons and speedy assaults. Fans of Asphyx should take note of Horrifier too (a piece of trivia for metal nerds: one of the band selections featured on the ensuing list is Deathhammer, no doubt named after the Asphyx album and song of the same name).

Our favorite Revelations of Gore tunes are “Compelled to Slaughter,” “Rejoice, Children of the Flesh” and “The Ingestion.” Here’s the latter for your listening (dis)pleasure:

Horrifier consists of Adrian Risøy on vocals and guitar, Sander Halvorsen on guitar, Erik Krokan on bass and Andreas Langås on drums. Risøy did us a solid by compiling a list of Norway bands exclusively for The Bad Penny; here’s a caveat he conveyed to us:

“With this list I’ve tried to stay clear of the more obvious bands from Norway (although some just had to be mentioned). This is mostly a list of my personal favorites, as well as some bands that have been important for metal, but aren’t perhaps as well known. I should also mention that this list is not ranked in any particular order.”

Now let’s get to Risøy’s picks.

Deathhammer

My vote for Norway’s best thrash metal band (if not the world’s best at this very moment in time), and one of my favorite bands of all time. These maniacs have been raging since 2005 and are still killing it to this day.

Ved Buens Ende

One of the most important bands for me personally, and arguably one of the most important influences on the avant-garde metal scene. I don’t consider myself to be a very spiritual person, but this band is probably one of the closest to a spiritual experience in music form.

Darkthrone

I don’t think I can say anything new or interesting that hasn’t already been said a hundred times, except that people who say that the Goatlord album with the added vocals suck are wrong!

Vomit

One of the most important bands for the early extreme metal scene in Norway. They where the first in Norway to play this kind of music, alongside Mayhem, and has even been noted by Nicke Andersson himself to be an influence on early Nihilist/Entombed.

Obliteration

I always thought this band had a very esoteric and Lovecraftian vibe to them, especially on their last two records, with occult chanting (hear Goat Skull Crown), weird riffing at times and overall frantic vocals conveying horrors beyond human comprehension. Perhaps the best death metal band from Norway, in my opinion.

Morax

Now for something a bit different. Norway hasn’t had much historically when it comes to classic heavy metal bands. Sure, in the ’80s, we had great cult bands like Black Angels and bigger arena bands like T.N.T., but compared to our neighbors in Sweden, we didn’t really have much to compete with. Luckily there has been a resurgence with bands like Black Magic, Flight (although perhaps more proto/’70-prog with their latest effort) and Black Viper (leaning more toward speed metal), among others.

And now we have Morax, which came out with their debut EP [Rites and Curses] in 2023, followed up by their debut album, The Amulet, in 2025. They play a perfect style of heavy metal in my opinion, mixing the best parts of Mercyful Fate with In Solitude, scratching a very specific itch that not many bands manage to do.

Aura Noir

Perhaps Norway’s most known (black) thrash act, and for a very good reason. In a time when only second-wave black metal ruled the scene, these guys where thrashing and drinking beer in the graveyard. They also have a very distinct riffing style to them that set them apart from a lot of other thrash metal bands.

Filthdigger

This is Autopsy worship galore, so obviously it has to go on this list. Probably the closest I’ve ever heard someone sounding like Chris Reifert. Sick shit!

Condor

Best way I could describe this band is if Destruction had way more violent vocals and was overall way more intense. Their album Unstoppable Power is in my opinion one of the best metal albums to ever come out of Norway.

Black Viper

Perfect speed/heavy metal! Just listen to the opening title track from Hellions of Fire, for example. It’s just riffs upon riffs! They are currently recording their second album, I think, and I cannot wait!
