Top 10 Best Chilean Metal Bands, According to Native Black-Metal Act Ad Finem Omnia
Black-metal act Ad Finem Omnia are still riding high off the release of their second studio album, Senectus Viae, in July. but multi-instrumentalist Pablo Vera still generously carved out some time from his hectic array of goings-on to contribute to the ongoing series we’re calling The Bad Penny Passport.
We’ve checked in with musicians in more than a dozen countries to get lists of the top 10 bands/musicians who hail from their homeland. Astute observers may recall we did a Chilean installment of the series with noise-punk band Niño Nuclear. But Vera’s list is more metal-oriented, reflecting a different sector of the country’s music scene (which is mostly based in the capital city of Santiago).
Vera doesn’t just write in gorgeous prose throughout his entry, he also included an introduction of his own. So let’s get to it.

Chile is an isolated country, a long and stubborn strip of land that feels designed for people to live far from everything, including themselves. Between deserts that melt you, glaciers that bite, and cities where the weather changes faster than musical trends, metal found a natural place to grow here. Not out of romanticism or heroism, but because in a country this improbable, the music had to be just as improbable.
In the ’80s, while the country went through political moments that today would make for a documentary no one wants to watch twice, the first thrash and death metal bands emerged. It wasn’t a spiritual revolution or a collective awakening; it was noise, energyand necessity. And it worked.
Today, the Chilean scene is broad, diverse, and often surprisingly good. Some bands build careful atmospheres, others sound like decaying industrial machinery, and a few seem designed to make traditional listeners deeply uncomfortable. I don’t follow every release, I don’t listen to everything in depth, and I’m not trying to make an academic inventory. But I do recognize that many of these bands have achieved something valuable: solid ideas, well‑crafted albums, and an identity that doesn’t ask for permission.
This list covers different styles within Chilean metal. It’s not objective, diplomatic, or representative of anyone. It’s simply the bands I consider noteworthy, for their sound, their trajectory, or because they simply do things well.
Atomic Aggressor is one of the pioneers of Chilean death metal and remains active without falling into self‑indulgence or cheap nostalgia. They still sound fresh despite having lived through everything, maintaining a raw, direct style they’ve never betrayed. They’ve evolved within their own language, recording and touring with the same conviction as always. A clear example of firm, honest Chilean death metal that doesn’t ask for permission.
Poema Arcanus has spent years crafting serious, atmospheric doom without exaggeration. From their early work they showed a clear identity, strengthening it over time without diluting themselves or living off nostalgia. I haven’t followed them closely in recent years, but their impact is undeniable: a consistent, solid band with a catalog that stands on its own.
3. Invunche
A band that blows my mind. Black metal, punk, ritualistic and atmospheric, a mix that doesn’t try to please anyone. Dark, primitive, and absolutely honest. Invunche doesn’t aim to fit into any category or meet external expectations; it simply exists as something raw, direct, and ceremonial. A unique proposal within Chilean metal and highly recommended.
4. Uaral
Uaral no longer exists as an active band, yet they remain more alive than many who still play. Their music carries an intensity few groups ever reach. Folk, doom, and brutal melancholy without adornments. Raw, intimate and honest to the bone. Even in silence, what they left behind is essential.
5. Acero Letal
Acero Letal is pure heavy metal. Firm attitude, steel meeting steel. Sharp riffs, Spanish lyrics, and an identity that doesn’t negotiate. Powerful, honest, and direct, a band that understands exactly what it means to keep Chilean heavy metal alive without falling into imitation or empty nostalgia. Highly recommended.
6. Sol Sistere
Sol Sistere is a band I know from the inside; I’m a founder, so this is just my opinion, but an opinion with some experience. Atmospheric black metal: intense, emotional, and built with intention rather than unnecessary ornamentation. Over the years we earned international attention not through marketing or noise, but because the music spoke for itself. A serious, honest project with a clear identity in Chilean metal.
7. Inanna
Inanna is no longer active, but they absolutely deserved a place here. Their technical, thoughtful death metal left a clear mark on the Chilean scene. Intelligent composition, riffs that demand attention, and an execution that allowed them to stand out inside and outside the country. Brutality and atmosphere in balance, without exaggeration or borrowed formulas. A serious, intense, and memorable band.
Animus Mortis always dared to go further than many of their contemporaries. I wouldn’t call them pioneers, but they used ideas ahead of their time: arpeggios, riffs, and structures uncommon in Chile when they appeared. Their music carries a marked darkness, deep atmosphere, and a hypnotic character that pulls you in without asking. Still active, and absolutely worth mentioning for their quality, intention, and depth.
9. Ripper
Ripper is surgical precision in death/thrash form. Riffs built to destroy, speed without sacrificing clarity, and execution that shows real craft. They’re one of those bands that don’t need explanation; the music hits, cuts, and makes it obvious why they earned respect inside and outside Chile. Intense, fast, and unmistakable.
10. Horrifying
Horrifying delivers dark, direct death metal with no concessions. Rotten riffs, dense atmospheres, and a raw, almost primitive vibe made with total conviction. They captured the spirit of the darkest death metal without sounding like a copy or tribute; it’s their own language, their own shadow. A band that drags, hits, and leaves a mark.

These bands are simply the ones that caught my attention at different moments, for their music, their work ethic, or the vibe they transmit. It’s not a ranking or an absolute truth, just a personal selection shaped by experience and by what has resonated with me over time.
