Top 6 Best Lithuanian Metal Bands, According to Native Sons Erdve
Didn’t think you’d ever read a story about bands from Lithuania, did ya? Didn’t realize that Lithuania boasts some killer metal outfits, did ya? Didn’t think there’d be more worth listening to than fingers you have on one hand, did ya?
Well, that’s why The Bad Penny is here. To bring you stories you wouldn’t have guessed existed but that turn out to be both informative and entertaining.
Blackened hardcore phenoms Erdve recently did us the honor of compiling a list of the best metal bands from their country as part of The Bad Penny Passport series, in which we virtually trot around the globe and touch base with musicians to learn about the best heavy musical talent in their homeland.
Erdve are celebrating their 10th birthday this year, and they did so in part with the release of their mind-scrambling third record, Epigrama. The record not only features eight songs about what they cite as “entropy, regret, psychological erosion, grief, guilt and stagnation” but also one of the more badass album covers you’ll see this year:
Their music videos are visually striking too:
Now that we’ve sold you on Erdve, let’s see if the band’s vocalist and guitarist, Vaidotas Darulis, can sway you to check out what he considers to be Lithuania’s best metal bands.

Since Lithuania has a very small scene, it’s very difficult to be objective about these kind of things because we basically know everyone here. We would just like to share a list of bands that we have personally known for years or are directly connected with us one way or another.
1. Extravaganza
Always a top contender in our books, Extravaganza also features our bass player, Karolis [Urbanavičius]. Taking the most rough aspects of black metal and turning them into beautiful poetry, Extravaganza is difficult to describe but easy to feel and get into.
2. Nooseweight
A beatdown hardcore band featuring our guitarist Adomas [Varnelis]. They only recently emerged, pushing the sound in the vein of Thrown, Kublai Khan TX, Knocked Loose and other great bands like that. I think Nooseweight is especially strong live and will become an established act of this genre in the near future.
A deathcore band, and exceptionally good in live settings, Death in Taiga have a very well-defined sound that sticks (which is often not the case in this genre). They’re all very talented musicians, and I always look forward to their upcoming releases.
4. Luctus
The most well-known metal band in Lithuania, Luctus have crafted their art for more than two decades. The band is well-known for its very notable live performances with atmospheric rituals of sound and spectacle. Also, it’s always a pleasure to share the stage with them.
5. Aortes
Our good friends and touring brothers, Aortes create dense post-metal. We’ve played many shows together, with each seemingly becoming more oppressive than the last one. Their version of [Nirvana’s] “Something in the Way” has become my go-to version of that song.
A band doing a unique variation of death metal, Crypts of Despair are very dedicated to their sound and craft, and incredibly tight live shows.
