10 Best Free Bandcamp Downloads #18: Fake Dust, Cvinger, Negativa, Tenebra, Why Bother?, Nott, Alienator, 2 Slices

Welcome to the 18th installment of The Bad Penny‘s Bandcamp Freebie series, in which we handpick our favorite free songs on the platform and dish them up for your consumption. Are we gonna get out of this thing alive, dear readers? Let’s not think of that, shall we, even though I just asked you.

Ladies and gentlemen, we entreat you with our latest batch of free music of the highest quality. (And the lowest price.) Not as many full-lengths time around as in recent editions past. But we think you’ll survive. All 10 titles featured here free. And yes, you ARE welcome.

1. Fake Dust’s Demo 2022 and Tour Promo

Portland’s power-violence grindcore goons Fake Dust are still getting their sea legs; they came together in 2020 but just put out their first full-length, Decrepitizing Din of the Cerebral Psyopticon, in May via esteemed label Iron Lung Records and Headsplit Records. But like a nice attendant working at an ice cream store, the quartet has granted us free samples of their music in the form of these two (albeit very short) releases.

2. Cvinger’s The Enthronement ov Diabolical Souls and Abyss of Horns Demo/Single

Is a Slovenian occult black metal band with an occasional fetish for death metal what you’ve been looking for after all these years? Yer in luck! Cvinger check all those boxes (presumably in blood). The band just released its newest album, Rites Ov Flesh, today, but if you’re on the fence about buying it, check out these two freebies available for free on their Bandcamp page.

3. Negativa’s O4

Here’s a beaut that probably flew under the radar of just about every black-metal lover from Spain – or anywhere else in the world, for that matter: the third studio LP by D. of Délirant and Hässlig note. Negativa had been D.’s longest-running project, but this appears to be its last if not latest release, as it came out in 2022.

4. Tenebra’s Gen Nero, Human Colonies split and “Doctor Please” (Blue Cheer cover)

Punk/psych-rock posse Tenebra got a tip of the hat from Italian post-metal/doom band Orbita on the list of best heavy bands from their homeland that The Bad Penny published to great fanfare two days ago. Try these free songs on for size and you’ll understand why.

5. Why Bother?’s entire discography

Why bother to make music? Why bother to make it available to the public? Because of bands like this one, that’s why. Hailing from Mason City, Iowa, these post-punk garage-rock enthusiasts are as generous as a band can get, putting up their entire discography for free. Better yet, they’re altruistic. per a statement on their Bandcamp page: “As we shift out of the Age of Pisces, chaos reigns. The corrupt leaders continue to squeeze water from the stone of life, and humanity continues to look for the light in a growing darkness. It is easy to feel powerless… to give up hope… but do not despair.” Why bother not giving these guys a listen? It certainly won’t lighten your pocketbook or wallet.

6. Nòtt’s … and s/t LP

We featured Nòtt in the last edition of our Bandcamp Freebies series but neglected to include these two additional releases the band has benevolently posted for free download on their page. The much-buzzed-about black-metal band hails from the Pacific Northwest and has a new album, As All Is Undone, dropping September 4. Get an edge on your head-banging pals by getting onboard the Nòtt train early.

7. Alienator’s Demo

Yours truly recently reviewed Alienator’s new EP, Brutal Occupation, for Post-Trash. But if my appraisal that this Portland band has been unwaveringly devoted to hardcore since day one — and, for our money, will probably adhere to that philosophy until their dying day – wasn’t enough to convince you, maybe listening to this free demo will.

8. Órbita’s Estado de animación suspendida, Punto de no retorno and Base Tranquilidad

Full disclosure: In researching Italian band Orbita for the aforementioned rundown of Italy’s best heavy bands, I initially read into Órbita, a post-pop group from Spain. Turns out they’re pretty awesome too – and have three releases available for free on their Bandcamp page. Ah, serendipity, what would we do without you?

9. 2 Slices’ What’s 2 Explain

Charleston, South Carolina’s 2 Slices aren’t just giving away a pair of songs on their Bandcamp page – they’re ponying up with nine! Fans of dance, electronic music and psychedelic pop take note: These guys have been around for a little while but appear ready to bust a move into the limelight.

10. Feral’s Never Again EP and The Live Album No One Asked For

Ending this 18th edition of Bandcamp Freebies with a bang, we bring you Feral (not to be confused with Feral Kids, who we introduced you to here and who graciously gave us their list of the 10 best heavy bands in their homeland of Finland here), this gang from Amsterdam coyly characterize themselves as A rogue karaoke singer, a rowdy bass player and a drum machine walk into a bar.” You’ll have fun listening to these freebies – which is the whole damn point of this series.
