10 Best Free Bandcamp Downloads #17: Restless Spirit, Meltt, Florist, Nòtt, Délirant, Couch Slut Covers Fugazi

Welcome to the 17th installment of The Bad Penny‘s Bandcamp Freebie series, in which we handpick our favorite free songs on the platform and dish them up for your consumption. Are we gonna get out of this thing alive, dear readers? Let’s not think of that, shall we, even though I just asked you.

Ladies and gentlemen, we entreat you with our latest batch of free music of the highest quality. (And the lowest price.) Not as many full-lengths time around as in recent editions past. But we think you’ll survive. All 10 titles featured here free. And yes, you ARE welcome.

(Note: If you’re financially capable of supporting any of these artists and/or labels, please consider doing so.)

1. Restless Spirit’s “Clarity,” 1922 EP, “Ripped From Me” and Harvest EP.

Restless Spirit came through Boise last year and blasted the doors off the Shredder with the mighty Gozu. Desert rock, stoner metal, prog and psych rock … Restless Spirit touch almost all the heavy-music bases on the self-titled album they released last year through Magnetic Eye. As a way of congratulating them on their recent tour with another breakout band worth hobbing knobs with, Witch Ripper, find all the Restless Spirit goodies mentioned above at a pay-what-you-want rate on Bandcamp.

2. Meltt’s s/t EP

We’ve had lotsa fun with Meltt in recent years, chatting up Vancouver’s most dependable source of psych-rock before their Treefort Music Fest set in 2003 and gabbing with them about their favorite movies a few years later. Well, today we’re privileged to welcome them into yet another one of The Bad Penny‘s ongoing series, Bandcamp Freebies. Meltt have a formidable catalog; hear for yourself.

3. Florists Adrift

Expect to hear more about doom seeders Florist on The Bad Penny in a couple of weeks – the red-hot Ripple Music is reissuing last year’s Florist’s Adrift next month. But in the meantime, if you can’t wait till Aug. 21 (or don’t have a record player, a functioning speakers, a receiver … all right, we’ll stop making you feel bad), the generous stoner-psych-records Florists (and really, are there any other kinds?) have the album available for free download on (you guessed it!) Bandcamp.

4. Nòtt’s s/t EP and “

Nòtt – quite possibly the most extreme atmospheric black-metal band in Minnesota (the competition is serious, fer real!) – released the second single from their upcoming album, September 4’s As All Is Undone, today:

“This song is about the point where you stop fighting. Not because you’ve found peace, not because things are okay, but because the only option left is to surrender to it all,” the band said in a statement about its new song. “As All Is Undone is a descent through the Seven Stages of Grief, not toward healing, but toward collapse. Each song marks another fracture. ‘Show Me the End’ is the moment where the loss becomes undeniable, where resistance finally gives way, and all that’s left is to watch it fall.”

If you like what you read/hear/smell/etc., go to Silent Pendulum Records‘ website – as well as Nòtt‘s – to preorder As All Is Undone and snag its first two singles. Dig a little deeper on Nòtt’s Bandcamp page and you’ll find their first release – a self-titled five-song collection from January 2018, and their subsequent single “” – free of charge.

5. Windard of Ox’s Boogie Boards, High Tide and Low Tide

Can you believe that an album with as silly a name as Boogie Boards, High Tide and Low Tide was not only released in the first place but then put out again a few years later in digital form!? What has this world come to?! In all seriousness, this is actually a pretty cool collection issued by respected label Deathbomb Arc in digital form for the first time. The band featured members of Gang Wizard, The Snow Queen and Partnerships, and this reissue features four really long outtakes, so it’s well overdue to finally give experimental noise-rock project their due. Goddammit!

6. Couch Slut “Full Disclosure”

Initially issued on Silence Is a Dangerous Sound, Ripcord Records’ tribute to Fugazi, in 2021, you’ve had five years to get your act together, son, and either hear or acquire Couch Slut’s rendition of the legendary band’s “Full Disclosure.” It’s Bizarro Fugazi. Listen to it now or I’ll get the Festival pole from the closet!

7. Délirant’s “Devastators of the Suns (A Tribute to Katharsis)”

Here’s another cover you should have heard by now but almost definitely haven’t because the world is cruel and empty and unforgiving and unloving – and because you are not paying attention, son! Spanish dissonant black metal band Délirant, for whom we have mostly Sentient Ruin to thank for their U.S. exposure, annihilates Katharsis’ “Devastators of the Suns.” Enjoy.

8. Left to Die’s s/t EP

When you’re thumbing through crates of records and come upon a great discovery, is the first thought that occurs to you the year in which it was released or how you’re going to keep brain mush from drizzling out your ears as soon as the needle drops, if it really rips? Yeah, we thought so. In researching to write my review of Left Behind’s just-released Initium Mortum for Bandcamp Daily. I stumbled cross this similarly named s/t EP – and found it to be a worthy listen. Imagine Satyricon holding Khanate hostage. Yes. It sounds exactly, 100 percent like that.

9. Blackstaff – Cloak of Stars EP

“The mission is simple: transport the listener to another world, and crush them.” So goes the motto adhered to by these grizzly-bearded wilder beasts born in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The doom-sludge sorcerers rip into riffs like redwoods and sling their bass guitar so low, even a new one would be scuffed up by the day’s end. Blackstaff just released a new, three-song EP called Drowner; if if you’re on the fence about shelling out the mere three bucks for that, Cloak of Stars will likely force your return to the trough for more mauling metal all the same.

10. Efrim Manuel Menuck – “Baby It Has to Fall” single

Menuck, an experimental folk artist based in Montréal, released this song almost six years ago. We’ll let the full lyrics of “Baby It Has to Fall” wrap this week’s edition of Bandcamp Freebies, as we really need to end on a lighter note this week:

An empty road and a strand of trees
And just a little more time to spend with thee

O my dear my dear
Genocide is always near
Each day is like a year
And I Don’t know if we’ll see the morning

Pillars of fire at the cold mist of Dawn
Searchlights and midnight trials
At the rising mists of Dawn
They lead us to water just to watch us drown
O baby it has to fall

Pale horse is hungry and bellowing fire
Onward and awful with empty blue eyes
While slowly we crawl and slowly we rise
We just could’ve made it but we ran out of time
O baby it has to fall

An empty road and a strand of trees
And just a little more time to spend with thee
O baby it has to fall

Across the Golden road
The Forest exhales
Like trumpets in mud
The Sun is indifferent
And the trees Don’t give a fuck

We’re hanging ‘neath twilight in a state near to Grace
Every Star in the sky
Every Star in the sky
Every Star in the sky
Every Star
Hanging ‘neath twilight in a state near to Grace
Every Star in the sky
Every Star in the sky
Every Star in the sky
Every Star
Every light must go out
Every light must go out
Every light must go out
But not forever

Swing like axes children
Swing like axes children
Swing like lightning’s fall
The light goes out
And the light goes out
And the light goes out
But not forever

It’s gonna take a lot of swinging
To get out of this fucking hole
Baby, point in any direction
And that’s where we’ll go

The devil loosed his burning ships
Across those glowing shores
And threw across the water 1,000,000 conquistadors
While their regal god slept in his nest
Hid behind Golden clouds
He muttered to himself and he did not raise a hand
While his empire grew upon burning flowers
Above that burning land
We are their burning flowers this is our burning land

The executioner
And the executioner’s filthy children
The executioner
And the executioner’s filthy children
Raised in the land of milk and dead honeybees
Fed on colonial entitlements and ar-15’s
A functioning deathkamp needs a lot of police
A functioning deathkamp needs a lot of police

What value is a state like this?
A fool’s weight pressed upon our necks
What value is a state like this?
That watches us die and does not assist
That banks on our deaths no matter the price
Just to delay their own slow demise

So walk me to the edge and back again
Tell me everything’s alright
Thru endless days and the Mercy of night
Thru sideways rain and hard sharp snow
Hold me tight and Don’t let go

And I will drive a truck
I will drive a truck into
And I Will drive a truck
I Will drive a truck into
Into their glass atrium
With blood on my cheek and a shit-eating grin
With glass in my hair and the engine burning
I’ll read our demands and I’ll tell ‘em who sent me
And I will drive a truck
I will drive a truck into

Free is free
Free should mean free
Free should be free
Free means free

The burning word
The burning world

Love.
