In case you haven’t heard – and really, God bless you if you haven’t – the president of the United States of America and Dana White are planning to stage a UFC fight on the White House South Lawn on June 14 as part of a “celebration” of Trump‘s birthday. Well, Boise’s music scene is planning a vastly more enjoyable, safer and morally legit event of its own: an all-ages battle of the bands referred to “Prize Fight Fest,” happening Jan. 16 at the Shrine Social Club.

“The event commemorates the turning of a new leaf for Mount Orange Records to re-launch as a sister-label of Mishap,” the event organizers said in a statement, noting that it will also serve as a label showcase of sorts. “[We’ll] be ringing in the new year with several new artists and releases, many of which are performing on the following lineup.”

Posted in Lists with tags , , , , , , , , , on 12/15/2025 by Kurt Orzeck

The Bad Penny is rolling out its favorite albums of 2025 in five installments this year, with the first and second batches having already dropped. While the other three will plop down imminently, we’re smashing the self-indulgence and monotony by inviting some of our favorite Boise music-heads to share their own top 10s with us and, by extension, you.

We’re delighted by the picks that the participants received, as they run the genre gamut and include many albums of which The Bad Penny wasn’t even aware.

A boatload of thanks to Travis Abbott of Ealdor Bealu and Shadow & Claw, DJ Joe Black of Dayglow Drip and KRBX Radio Boise, Gus Marsden of Breathing Records, Catherine Merrick of The Record Exchange, Chad Remains of Ghorot, Tyler Squire of Onsetter, Shadrach Tuck of Chief Broom and Mishap Records, and Nathan Walker of Duck Club/ Treefort Music Fest/ MusicIdaho for participating in this team effort.

Without further ado, here are the lists of the top 10 albums released in 2025 that some of The Bad Penny‘s favorite Boise peeps (the kids still say that word, right?) graciously shared with us.

Posted in Interviews with tags , , on 11/17/2025 by Kurt Orzeck

The Shrine in Boise is on fire this week, having hosted tastemaker-appetizing performances by the likes of Greet Death, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Bass Drum of Death in the last three nights alone. The venue aims to continue its hot streak with another must-see gig this evening, featuring Mexico City-based post-punk quintet Diles Que No Me Maten with local band Chief Broom of Boise’s own Mishap Records handling opening duties.

Chief Broom frontman Shadrach Tuck (also of Trauma Kit and owner of Mishap) and drummer Max Voulelis (also of Porcelain Tongue) imparted their excitement for the gig to The Bad Penny on Sunday night.

Diles Que No Me Maten “came through [Boise] last fall, and the whole band couldn’t make it, so I ended up doing an acoustic, stripped-down version of the set,” Tuck recalled. “It was just guitar, vocals, cello and pedal steel. It was fun. We kind of became friends after that show.”
