Exclusive: Ex-Amon Amarth Drummer Pays Tribute to At the Gates’ Tomas Lindberg With a Riotous Recollection

“[At the Gates] are awesome human beings, and Tompa was the fucking unicorn.”

Many of us are still trying to cope with the sudden loss of Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, arguably the best vocalist and lyricist in Scandinavian melodic death metal, last month. At the Gates, the band he led, helped pioneer one of metal’s best subgenres, also known as melodeth. Lindberg family, friends, bandmates, fans and anyone who reveres At the Gates are still processing and trying to make sense of his passing at age 52 due to a rare type of cancer called Adenoid cystic carcinoma.

But while people continue to shed tears over the loss of Lindberg, another iconic member of Scandinavian melodeth tried to help those still grieving by exclusively providing The Bad Penny with a downright hilarious story that could only happen in the world of heavy metal. Fredrik Andersson — who played drums for another legendary melodic death metal band, Amon Amarth, from 1997 to 2015 —simultaneously expressed his admiration for Lindberg and shared an Irish wake laugh during an interview this writer conducted earlier this month.

Song Premiere: Strawberry Alarm Clock’s ‘Monsters’

For all the love and attention that psych-rock is getting these days – mostly courtesy of and directed toward newish bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Osees and Ty Segall – there’s still a dearth of appreciation and respect for some of the bands that established the heady, colorful sound in the first place. They include 13th Street Elevators, Love, Captain Beefheart and – perhaps more than all the rest – Strawberry Alarm Clock.

The band that formed in 1966 in Glendale, California, is perhaps best known for its prime placement in the über-cult 1970 classic movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, directed by sexploitation pioneer Russ Meyer and written by Roger Ebert based off a bizarre and beyond-campy story they both wrote. Strawberry Alarm Clock’s best-known song remains “Incense and Peppermints.”

Strawberry Alarm Clock has undergone lineup changes and breakups over the years but is roaring back with a new single, “Monsters.” The song sees an official release tomorrow with the B-side “White Light,” and The Bad Penny couldn’t be more proud to premiere both a day early. The record release of “Monsters” marks the first time a Strawberry Alarm Clock song has appeared on vinyl since the band’s initial stretch from 1966 to 1971.

Exclusive News: SUMAC and Moor Mother Plotting Second Collaborative LP

SUMAC and Moor Mother, whose collaborative record The Film is one of the most universally acclaimed metal releases of the year, are already planning a follow-up effort, SUMAC frontman Aaron Turner confirmed to The Bad Penny on Thursday.

In response to The Bad Penny noting the widespread positive reaction that SUMAC and Moor Mother received for The Film, Turner replied: “I was very pleased that it got such a warm reception. It felt like a very challenging record. I was confident in what we produced but had no expectation in terms of how it was going to be received. We’re definitely talking with her about more shows upcoming in the near future, and then a little further down the road, to make another record together. I hope that happens.”

Exclusive Video Premiere: Linda From Work’s ‘Blood in the Water’

Exclusive: Ivy Readying Second LP With Songs Featuring Adam Schlesinger

Ivy are in the process of piecing together a second collection of songs featuring their late band member Adam Schlesinger, the band told The Bad Penny in an interview on Thursday.

“[We have a] second record [featuring Schlesinger] that is basically done – recorded, mastered, everything,” Ivy guitarist/keyboardist Andy Chase revealed to The Bad Penny. “We have [yet] to figure out when it would be the right time [to release it].”

The news comes roughly three weeks after Ivy issued Traces of You, the indie-pop band’s first album in 14 years. The album consists of 10 songs Schlesinger made with Chase and vocalist Dominique Durand from 1995 to 2012—essentially the duration of the band’s career.

Chase and Durand reunited to complete the compositions along with backing keyboardist and guitarist Bruce Driscoll, who played a pivotal role on Traces of You with his writing, mixing, production, and engineering contributions (additional players included guitarist Jody Porter and percussionist Brian Young from Fountains of Wayne).

Schlesinger was one of the first well-known American cultural figures to die from COVID shortly after the pandemic hit. The universally beloved musician was better known as the frontman of Fountains of Wayne and the stockpile of awards the profusely prolific producer/writer amassed for his work in the TV and film industry: three Emmys, one GRAMMY, and an ASCAP Pop Music Award; to boot, he notched Oscar, Tony, and Golden Globe nominations.

Bar/None Records released Traces of You on September 5.

Exclusive: Mawiza Reveal Origin of Eco-Themed Collabo With Gojira Frontman

Solidarity is hardly a new concept to Mawiza, an indigenous metal/folk group born and bred in sacred Mapuche Nation lands in Chile. In 1861-’83, the military staged campaigns and an occupation of the Araucanía Region in central Chile under the Orwellian-sounding “Pacification of Araucanía.” The indigenous community had to band together if they wanted a chance to survive the military incursion. Nevertheless, the brutal invasion paved the way for notorious, U.S.-backed Augusto Pinochet’s military coup about 100 years later.

Formed in 2014, Mawiza’s stated goal — beyond concocting an entirely original sound that fuses metal with Mapuche folk music — is “to preserve ancestral roots, rescue indigenous moral values and to promote biodiversity conservation, guided by the indigenous worldview and struggle.” (Read more about the band and its mission in an interview with Mawiza vocalist and rhythm guitarist Awka, as part of our ongoing series On Tyranny.)

As Mawiza’s career progressed, the band found that another critical issue is inherent in indigenous communities valiantly attempting to preserve their culture and land: the environment. Fortuitously, the band drew attention and, subsequently, ardent support, from a band more than 7,000 miles away that is considered metal royalty across the globe: Gojira. In its lyrics for songs ranging from “Global Warming” to “Toxic Garbage Island” to the entirety of 2005’s From Mars to Sirius, the French progressive-metal band makes it a top priority to educate their fans about eco-awareness.

Mawiza and Gojira bonded even more closely when the latter band took the former one under their wing and performed together live. Cementing their friendship and admiration for each other, Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier traveled to the Mapuche community to record his featured spot on “Ti Inan Paw-Pawkan,” the first single from Mawiza’s new album ÜL, which Season of Mist issued 12 days ago.

Exclusive Song Premiere: Sangre de Muérdago’s ‘O Abismo’

Hailing from Galicia, Spain, Sangre de Muérdago is the best Galician Folk band you’ve never heard of. Now, Sangre de Muérdago is the only Galician Folk band you have heard of.

The group uses Galician lyrics and a litany of instruments used in the Galician tradition to reflect on nature, mysticism and other themes.

“O Abismo” is the first single from Sangre de Muérdago’s upcoming full-length, O Xardín, due September 12. Keep an eye out for the release of the album’s second single on August 8, and a third one a week before the album release. The Bad Penny is proud to exclusively premiere “O Abismo” and its accompanying video today.

Supergloom Shimmy Closer to Debut LP With New Single ‘Shimmer,’ Accompanying Video

Private eyes are stereotyped for sticking close to, but not scaring off, their target until the person reaches their ultimate destination. Similarly, The Bad Penny continues to monitor the activity of supergloom as the shoegazing LA newcomers inch closer to realizing their first full-length record.

Earlier this year–on April Fools Day, to be precise–we introduced you to supergloom around the time they released “sideFX,” the first single from their still-untitled debut. The heady, cleverly named song exemplified what would become their maiden release. We touched base with supergloom toward the end of April, at which point they let The Bad Penny exclusively unveil a new song, “Kingfisher.”

Exclusive: Nick Oliveri Reminisces About QOTSA, Kyuss Amid Reunion Rumors
