Exclusive: Agrimonia Guitarist Gifts Us With First Interview Surrounding Swedish Post-Metal Band’s New LP, ‘Of the Shadows’
If there’s one country that has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to top-notch metal bands per capita, it’s undeniably Sweden. The upshot of that fact is you can throw a stone in any direction if you set foot there; the downside is that competition is fierce, and some of the best metal talent in the world gets overlooked. Case in point is Agrimonia, one of The Bad Penny‘s favorite bands of the last 20 years.
Agrimonia’s second record, Rites of Separation, topped The Bad Penny‘s list of best records of 2013. Their follow-up, Awaken, took the same spot five years later. So it is with immense humility and gratitude that we scored the first interview with the band about their new record, Of the Shadows, about four days before the band announced it.
The crust- and sludge-loving Agrimonia consists of vocalist/keyboardist Christina Blom, guitarist Magnus Andreasson, guitarist/keyboardist Pontus Redig and drummer Björn Eriksson – all of whom helped found the band in 2005 – along with bassist Martin Larsson, who entered the fold in 2010 after stints in At the Gates among other groups.
From what we’ve heard of Agrimonia’s new effort thus far, it sounds like the band has loosened up a bit this time around and relished in exploring and expanding their epic sound. But if that ain’t your bag, don’t fear; their trademark blitzkriegs still pack a punch.
Here’s proof, in the form of the first song that Agrimonia have unveiled from Of the Shadows (which you can preorder on their Bandcamp page):
We talked Redig’s ear off about Of the Shadows and much more a few weeks back and are delighted to present our conversation to you, dear readers.
