Austin Psych/Doom Trio The Well Are Well on Their Way for a Bloody Good Time in Boise Tonight
Being a doom band doesn’t require one to have a doom-and-gloom outlook on life, and yesterday afternoon, Austin’s The Well proved that fact during a phone interview in anticipation of their concert at Boise’s Neurolux tonight.
“We are surrounded by desert, open space, and then beautiful cliffs and mountains in the distance,” bassist Lisa Alley as the trio traversed their way through Utah en route to a gig in Salt Lake City. “Hawkwind would be a good soundtrack to this.”
Coming off a spate of shows in Colorado, this tour is proving to be extra special for the RidingEasy Records band because many heavy-music lovers attending their concerts are approaching them before and after their shows to declare themselves repeat offenders to witnessing The Well play live.
“We’ve got a growing base of fans who are coming to multiple shows,” guitarist/vocalist Ian Graham chimes in.
Those fans have an even greater incentive to catch The Well on their current tour, as they’re playing selections from a new LP – ...And Flames Ran Like Living Animals (Spaceflight) – they dropped a little over a month ago.
Drummer Jason Sullivan confides: “There are areas of certain [new] songs that we’re kind of figuring out and getting comfortable with fine-tuning. It’s like breaking in furniture.”
Graham adds: “One song that we have added to this set, ‘Mystery Babylon,’ we wrote purposefully to have a jam segment. It’s been fun to incorporate that into the live set because it morphs every night that we play it.”
As a band that has toured consistently since 2013 – not precisely Bob Dylan’s “Never Ending Tour,” but at least adjacent to it – The Well have gotten to the bottom of where they’re best received.
“Chicago, Denver, the Pacific Northwest … we get treated like rock stars there,” Alley considers. “And I would say Boise for sure.”
The Well is no stranger to the City of Trees, having played here with Truckfighters in May 2025. They also recall performing in the city many years before that and under sketchy circumstances.
“We stayed at a place that was basically a drug hotel with hourly rates,” Alley recalls, although the name of the establishment doesn’t resurface in her mind. “We’ve gotten much quainter and spoiled in our older age, compared to those hourly-rate hotel days.”
As it should be. It’s dawning on fans that … And Flames Ran Like Living Animals is The Well’s consummate record thus far, bristling with the airy “New Hallelujah for the Damned” to the head-bopping to the groovy “Season of the Flame” to the deeply penetrating epic “Mother Leeds.”
Graham concludes: “The three of us made a commitment early on that we would pour ourselves into The Well, and it’s paying off as we’re attracting more fans who are devoting themselves to us too.”
