10 Best Free Bandcamp Downloads #13 (Steroid Edition): Multiple DLs From Gottlieb, Nequient, Thou, Malevich

We injected steroids into the 13th and latest installment of our Bandcamp Freebies series. Let us explain: Whereas the installments typically feature one pay-what-you-want single, EP or LP by each of the 10 bands featured in them, this time we’re providing between two to 11 downloads per artist. But because one post can only swell so much before it becomes unwieldy, we’re only spotlighting five great artists this time around. Nonetheless, this is still the meatiest edition in the series, so let’s not waste any more time and get to it.

1. Gottlieb

Of all the artists who have participated in our On Tyranny series, anarcho-punk band Gottlieb proved themselves to be hyper-informed about the threat of fascism and the importance of staving off its spread in the U.S. Their motto is “Get active or get out of punk,” and we couldn’t agree more.

2. Nequient

Jason Kolkey, who has a PhD in English from Loyola University Chicago, and works as an independent scholar and writer, is also high on the list of brainiest On Tyranny participants. He’s also the vocalist for Nequient, which is arguably the best grindcore band in Chicago. So it’d be sacrilege to omit him from this Bandcamp roundup.

3. Malevich

The third and final artist who is featured in On Tyranny and also featured in this edition of Bandcamp Freebies is Malevich, a self-described “post-death metal influenced blackened screamo/ power ambient” band. They’re on fire right now, as is the label to which Malevich is signed – British indie Church Road Records – so it’s a safe bet you’ll be hearing a lot more about them in the near future.

4. Ripple Music compilations

Founded in 2010 and instrumental in exacerbating the continued popularity of doom metal since then, Ripple Music has three various-artists comps up for grabs on its Bandcamp page. Download all three and you’ll get tunes by Wino, Fireball Ministry, Mos Generator, Mothership, Fuzz Evil and loads more bands – gratis. Not a bad deal, to say the least.

5. Thou

Thou, an anarcho-hardcore-punk-meets-sludge-and-doom-metal band, are surely the most prolific heavy band based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They put out a new release practically every month – far more often collaborative splits and EPs than full-lengths. They’ve teamed with Emma Ruth Rundle, Mizmor and The Body; check out the 21-year-old group and you’ll probably want to befriend them too. The first free release below, A Primer of Holy Words, compiles Thou covers of songs by Shellac, Minor Threat, Soundgarden, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pearl Jam (?); armed with that knowledge, we assume you’re already downloading it.
