Exclusive Song and Lyric Video Debut: ‘Stranger’ by Michael C. Hall’s Band Princess Goes
“Stranger,” the new song and video by Dexter and Six Feet Under actor Michael C. Hall’s band Princess Goes, is out today – and The Bad Penny has the honor of debuting it. The track is the first selection from the upcoming full-length by the band, which also features multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Matt Katz-Bohen (Blondie, Cyndi Lauper) and drummer Peter Yanowitz (Wallflowers, Natalie Merchant).
“Stranger” will be available for purchase on all major music providers tomorrow.
The three musicians founded Princess Goes in 2018 after vocalist/lyricist Hall met Katz-Bohen and Yanowitz as they all participated in performances of the acclaimed rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
After forming, the group put out two LPs and an EP. Their third full-length is due later this year and will be preceded by the release of additional singles.
Katz-Bohen touched base with The Bad Penny on Tuesday to exclusively discuss Princess Goes’ new song.
He said: ” ‘Stranger’ was chosen to be the first [single for the new album,] as it encapsulates the essentials of Princess Goes: the philosophic, free associative, poetic dream of the lyrics; the Romantic-era piano cascades, played on a Pleyel piano from 1840; the synths brewing and opening into a storm; the driving and ultra badass drumming taking us out into the sunset.
“Peter and I started jamming after we got back from the Hedwig national tour. We recorded some of our jams and decided it would be prudent to lay some vocals down. Peter asked Mike if he wanted to come listen and he said, ‘Heck yeah.’ We all looked at each other and slowly began nodding in unison. We knew we had it.”
Katz-Bohen continued: “[We follow] the unique alchemy of the three of us collaborating together though time and space. We try not to look at it directly in its eyes lest we scare it off, and have to chase it all night long.”
The band also said in a press statement: ” ‘Stranger’ is song about meeting each other with kindness and curiosity. A seminal ’90s grunge bass intro lead us into ’90s Britpop dance blur. We finally meet each other in the massive, epiphanic, glorious, and soaring finale, no longer strangers, but as … friends.”
