10 Best Free Bandcamp Downloads #6: Death Pose, Softcult, Hull of Light, Scott Lucas
Strapped for cash but hungry for great music? You won’t have much luck camping out at the grocery store these days; Bandcamp is a way better destination. Here’s a rundown of 10 rad releases, most newly released, that The Bad Penny recently came across on Bandcamp.
1. Death Pose – “Unresolved (A Song for Jeff)” (feat. Scott Lucas of Local H)
One year ago, Jeff Ulbrich – founding member of Chicago hard-rock squad Death Pose died unexpectedly, rendering his family, friends and bandmates inconsolable. None of those folks have fully recuperated from the devastating loss – and probably will – but participation by Local H frontman Scott Lucas shows the solidarity in Ulbrich’s community is still intact.
2. Mercury’s Antennae – Veil Opaque v.2
Portland, Oregon’s ambient darkwave unit Mercury’s Antennae aren’t categorizing this release as an EP, even though it only runs roughly five minutes and contains two remixes. But don’t bellyache – remember, like all the releases presented here, it can be yours for the low, low price of no money.
3. Hull of Light – Gilded Liminal Shrines
A description accompanying the release says everything you need to know about the record Hull of Light made two Mays ago: “Multi-coastal international collective of cosmic cowboys and cowgirls with members from Megason, Suffering Hour, Zeresh, Underground Spiritual Game & Sleepwalker [夢遊病者]. … Tracked at undisclosed locations under the guise of the pale moon and burning sun, 2023. … Endless gratitude to all who made this happen.”
4. VA – HPGD 2025 Full Year In Review 24 Track FREE Sampler
Philly extreme-music label continues its holiday tradition with 24 songs by bands on its roster: Ghoulhouse, Organ Dealer, Hemdale, Precursor, Violent Testimony, Chain to the Dead and Blood of the Wolf should give you a pretty good idea of what you’re in for if you dare press “play.”
5. Softcult – “Queen of Nothing” single
The band has coined yet another shoegaze subgenre – “riotgaze” – and provided its aural definition with this latest single in their four-and-a-half-year career. But if it doesn’t speak to you, try one of the other litany of songs featured on Softclub’s Bandcamp page – they’re all free.
The description accompanying the song touches all the bases: “Big Harp — the duo of Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney — return with a cover of The Cure’s ‘Boys Don’t Cry.’ It marks Big Harp’s first new release in 10 years, and their first for Saddle Creek since 2011’s White Hat and 2013’s Chain Letters.”
7. VA – We Don’t Make No Junk!
Oregon record label Emotional Response validates its titular contention with contributions from No Monster Club, Zac Denton, Wet Specimen, Seabite and other bands whose names serve as a reminder that they’re not far from the Pacific Ocean. Released way back in December 2022, the comp is still fresh – unlike any seafood that’s been left on the counter for that long.
8. Glorious Depravity – Death Never Sleeps
Fans of Cannibal Corpse, Decapitated and Power Trip take note: Released early last month, this LP captures Glorious Depravity in all their … glory. Dizzying death-thrash metal glory, that is.
9. Inna Vision With Ini Kamoze – Keep Distance EP
From the EP description on Bandcamp: “Inna Vision and reggae pillar iNi Kamoze join forces on the Keep Distance EP, a bold, uncompromising statement anchored by the commanding title track “Keep Distance.” First released as a stand-alone single, the anthem now arrives in its full form alongside a heavyweight dub version mixed by E.N Young, the stripped-down instrumental, and the clean radio edit.”

10. Boyracer – Really Stupid; The Primitives Covers
Boyracer says: “Some of these tracks previously unreleased, others barely heard outside hardcore ‘Racer faithful circles. I recently found a few unmarked CDrs that had mixes of the tracks, previously long forgotten out of existence. Celebrate the beauty of the Primitives coupled with the ham-fisted excellence that is early Noughties Boyracer. A classic combination!”
