The Bad Penny (beta)

Tried-and-true rock musician Trashy Annie appears like a rock vet who has been through the grind for decades – she’s a true believer of the authentic rawk music she writes and performs. And yet she’s still fairly new to most devoted classic-rock fans, having only released her first full-length album, Sticks & Stones, through Cleopatra Records in May 2023.

While based in Austin, Trashy Annie’s happy place is in a bar where she can blast her punk-infused hard-rock laced with country soul – in essence, the core ingredients needed to cook up a surefire concoction of American rock ‘n’ roll. She’s got the image down pat too, as if she began studying how to be a character actor from the day she was born till now. Trashy Annie lives and breathes her sweaty, snide and yet also endearing style, 24-7. Imagine a female version of Lemmy, and you’ll get the drift.

Oh, and did we mention that she’s a contestant on the current season of Survivor? 

We’ll have a larger story on Trashy Annie’s new record, Melanie’s Christmas Treasury, in on Nov. 17. (Preorder it on her Bandcamp page.) But in the meantime, she was gracious enough to share two songs from it with us, and provide exclusive comments about them as well:

“Jake”

“My latest single, ‘Jake,’ is a gritty, soulful anthem about self-realization and resilience. The song follows a woman caught in a loop of chasing love in all the wrong places—on the wrong buses, in the wrong trailer parks and with the wrong people. “Big Red Bow”

“ ‘Big Red Bow’ takes a bold left turn, weaving a touch of rap and hip-hop swagger into Trashy Annie’s rock foundation,” she exclusively told The Bad Penny. “It’s a provocative, unapologetic celebration of self-love and sexual empowerment that challenges the double standards placed on women. With biting honesty and sharp wit, [I] call out the hypocrisy of a world that praises men for freedom and punishes women for the same. ‘Big Red Bow’ is about embracing who you are, rejecting shame, and living life on your own terms of being loud, proud, and unrepentant.
