Exclusive News: SUMAC and Moor Mother Plotting Second Collaborative LP

SUMAC and Moor Mother, whose collaborative record The Film is one of the most universally acclaimed metal releases of the year, are already planning a follow-up effort, SUMAC frontman Aaron Turner confirmed to The Bad Penny on Thursday.

In response to The Bad Penny noting the widespread positive reaction that SUMAC and Moor Mother received for The Film, Turner replied: “I was very pleased that it got such a warm reception. It felt like a very challenging record. I was confident in what we produced but had no expectation in terms of how it was going to be received. We’re definitely talking with her about more shows upcoming in the near future, and then a little further down the road, to make another record together. I hope that happens.”

Prior to the April 25 release of The Film through Thrill Jockey, SUMAC and Moor Mother staged two special performances at Festsaal Kreuzberg in Berlin on April 17 and at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, two days later.

Turner also told The Bad Penny on Thursday that SUMAC met up again with 73-year-old Japanese free-improvisation singer Keiji Haino this year for another recording session. They previously released American Dollar Bill – Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous to Look at Face On in February 2018, also on Thrill Jockey.

Of the more recent session, Turner said, “We’ll shape that, go through and edit everything, and figure out what selections to use.”

He concluded: “There’s other things in the works too, but they’re not far enough along for me to really feel comfortable saying that they are imminent,” Turner added.
