Volcandra Amped to Annihilate Boise With First-Ever Gig in City of Trees Tonight
If you’re a fan of Prosthetic Records bands and live in Boise or the surrounding area, you’re in for a treat tonight: grind-tech giants Blindfolded and Led to the Woods and black-metallers Volcandra are descending on The Shredder sure to peel the skin off the faces of all who attend. We caught up with not only Blindfolded and Led to the Woods but also Volcandra ahead of the show. The openers gave us a preview of what to expect from their gig, shed some light on their in-the-works new album and revealed the one request they have while on tour.
Heya Volcandra. I can’t seem to find any indication you’ve played Boise before. Did you decide to come here simply because of routing, or were there other reasons why you’re choosing to grace this city with your magnificent presence?
Earlier this year, we got the offer to do this tour with Blindfolded and Led to the Woods. Volcandra hasn’t been out West yet, and BALTTW are our labelmates, so it just seemed like a no-brainer. We’re really excited to make it out to a lot of places we have yet to play. Doing a West Coast tour has been on our to-do list for quite some time.
How many songs from your next album can we anticipate you performing at the gig?
We just wrapped up recording for our third full length and don’t expect it to release until 2026, so we’ll be keeping those new songs under wraps for this one, actually. The set list we have prepared for this tour will be a solid mix of material from our first two full-length albums [2022’s Border World and 2024’s The Way of Ancients] and our EP [2020’s Into the Azure].
Please shed any insights you can on what we can expect from your last record and, if you can, the next one.
Our last record, The Way of Ancients, came out pretty much exactly as I had expected it to. We were all really satisfied with the end result.
When listening to the album we just recorded, even in its current and unfinished state, I’m kind of blown away. This new record has exceeded my expectations and really feels like an evolution for the band. It is far more diverse and collaborative than anything we’ve done before. It’s also really fucking intense.
What, in your mind, makes a Volcandra show a success?
I think it’s really important to surprise people who have never heard us before. When we finish a set and people are like, “I can’t believe I’ve never heard of you guys.” That’s a huge win.
Equally important, we have to live up to the hype of people who do know the music. When people come up to the merch table with stuff to sign and tell us they drove hours to come see us, that lights a fire under our asses to make sure we put on a great show.
What makes a show a success is wowing both kinds of people, interacting with them and showing gratitude that they came out. There are millions of bands out there. I’m glad anyone wants to listen to us.
What item/request on your tour rider might surprise people the most?
Probably nothing, haha. We don’t ask for anything outside of the ordinary. Just give us a decent place to park!
What’s the craziest show you guys have performed thus far?
One of the coolest shows we’ve done was RPM Fest in 2022. Played to a huge crowd, sold a ton of merch, and then some of us took mushrooms and enjoyed the rest of the festival. I was peaking while watching this band called Ecstatic Vision. They were incredible. Other killer bands that day were Hath, War Cloud, Leather Lung, Tower, Black Pyramid and Valient Thorr. Definitely one for the books.
What’s the lamest show you guys have performed thus far?
This wasn’t the lamest show we’ve ever done, but one of the worst interactions we’ve had with personnel at a show was when we played in Overland Park, Kansas. The sound guy that night got absolutely hammered and couldn’t even give us a proper soundcheck. Dude was having us check the drums before the microphones were even plugged in. Somebody give that guy a raise!
What’s the best show you’ve ever attended?
There’s lots of great ones, but seeing Iron Maiden in 2013 is the first show that comes to mind. Megadeth opened. Couldn’t ask for much more.
How did Volcandra come to be so awesome?
Thanks for the compliment! I think what makes this band what it is, is that we just make music we want to hear, and everyone is a team player. When it comes to writing, we leave our egos at the door and try to do what serves the songs best. When it comes to playing live and touring, everyone is all hands on deck and helps out wherever they can. We’ve been around for about seven years now, and I think we’re a pretty well-oiled machine.
Pick up a ticket for Volcandra‘s show with Blindfolded and Led to the Woods at the Shredder tonight in Boise here for about 19 bucks. Doors open at 7 p.m.
