Nest, Adored by Phil Anselmo, Touch Base Ahead of Boise Debut Tonight
Raise your hand if you’ve got a hankering for an ultra-low-end bludgeoning of the doomy sludge variety. Since we can’t see you, that probably wasn’t the smartest way to take a survey of interest. But if you like gnarly, nasty-sounding heavy rock, St. Louis trio Nest will be right up your alley and worthy of your attendance this evening in Boise.
The gloriously grody project of John Jarvis (Scour, Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Nest will tap heavily into Endeavors, which came out in April. It was the band’s third studio full-length since forming in 2019 but first for Housecore Records, the gang of bands championed by label owner Phil Anselmo. In fact, Nest recently partook in Housecore Home Haunt 2024, Anselmo’s annual Halloween fright fest in Louisiana.
At that special event, in which Jarvis’ also Scour participated, Nest trotted out their cover of Sepultura’s “Roots Bloody Roots,” which they’ll likely revisit at tonight’s gig with Infected Stench and Priestcraft. Nest concerts also call to mind Today Is the Day and Corrosion of Conformity, so if those bands are your bag, this trio will be too.
The Bad Penny caught up with Jarvis yesterday to welcome him and his bandmates bassist Terrell “TMoney” Clark and drummer Joseph Pequeno in advance to Boise, where Nest will play for the first time.
What are your expectations for Nest’s show in Boise on Sunday night?
This will be my first time playing! I’ve been through on tour with other bands, but this will be my first show!
Any crazy stories about being in Boise that you’d be willing to recount?
I do remember a dance club that was on the second floor of a building about 20 years ago. No idea the name, but it was a fun place.
What does Nest bring to the table that your other music projects don’t?
I’d say it’s just a different style than all of my other bands, I love them all.
Did you feel like you were filling a void with Nest, whether it be a sound or attitude or style that seemed to be missing?
Not really, I just wrote a lot of songs that I’d enjoy.
l always wonder how musicians with multiple projects diplomatically break the news to their current collaborators that they’re launching a new outfit. How did you go about doing that?
Usually just bring it up and hope they support it, luckily I jam with cool people and they all also have many bands.
When a musician has more than one active band going, is it inevitable that some collaborators will bicker or whine about that musician not spending enough time with the band they started first?
Not in my case, but I’m sure it happens to others.
How was that special HouseCore show?
Great! So cool to see COC’s first gig with (Pantera bass tech) Bobby (Landgraf) on bass, and Scour ripped a short set also.
Are you tight enough with Anselmo that you can share an innocuous but nonetheless amusing anecdote involving you and him?
We’ve spent the last few months working on his haunted house together, so I could go on forever! I can just say that he’s the best dude ever, and he’s helped me and others so much, it’s hard to put into words.
To what extent do you care about what others think of your music — even the fans?
It’d be great if everyone loved it, but I realize that’s not going to happen, so I try not to let any negativity get to me.
Purchase tickets for Nest’s show here. They’ll only set you back about $10. Doors at are 6 p.m., and the show starts an hour later.
