This’d make a strong episode of “Frontline” or “Now”: Victoria Bergsman, who records under the name Taken by Trees, journeyed all the way to Pakistan to record her new album, East of Eden. Her goal was to find artistic inspiration in a challenging, unusual area, and she seems to have pulled it off, becoming one of the few Western women to record in the region. Look for the album via Rough Trade on September 8. …

Major bummer: New Black Heart Procession album coming October 6 on Temporary Residence Ltd. We love these San Diegans, which means we’ll be having to suffer gladly through another slate of their lovely, dreary death marches. “Rats,” the first single from Six, is already crushing our spirits; talk about a band you hate to love. …

Ben Neill

Today’s a.m. listening: Ben Neill‘s Night Science, an alternately haunting and tranquil cocktail of odd acoustic trumpet atmospherics, low-key dub beats and other unexpected, crafty manipulations. The album, which will come out in September on Thirsty Ear, makes us wonder if electronic music really does have a soul after all. …

Seems these days like every band and its mother are doing the all-for-one-and-one-for-all co-ed shouting-vocals thing, but Johnny Foreigner Band weave in some nifty guitar hooks and gingerly drum rolls along with their juvenilia. You’ll have to go through a few hoops to download the Les Savy Fav-esque band’s three-song Feels Like Summer EP, but the sunny listen (especially “Wow. Just Wow”) is worth it. And we’re not sure which is more hard to believe, that JFB are only a trio or that they hail from Birmingham. …

Suckers

And do yourself another favor by picking up a live version of I Am Sound band Suckers‘ “Afterthoughts & TV” over at RCRD LBL. We’re not quite sure how a bunch of scuzzy-looking dudes from New York managed to come up with what sounds like an old, hilarious Don Van Vliet recording, but it got us grinning. …

Magnet’s Matthew Fritch and Matt Ryan have a lively debate going over whether Frank Black‘s solo oeuvre measures up to his output in the Pixies. Best line, courtesy Ryan: Prior to the reunion, “David Lovering was a real life Gob, doing magic tricks to eke out a living.” …

eyehategod

Those of you who love Eyehategod have reason to get excited: The Crescent City sludge-meisters are partnering with Better Than Everyone Records for a vinyl version of their most recent studio album, Confederacy of Ruined Lives, which came out all the way back in late ’00. The vinyl will finally be available in August. …

If you have any interest in the above, you might also wanna head over to the Nuclear Blast shop when you have a chance – they’re having a big ol’ blowout until Monday. The U.S. deluxe edition of In FlamesColony is going for a mere $2.70, while the non-deluxe version of Children of Bodom‘s Hatebreeder is pegged at $4.50. Get bangin’. …

One more item for the metal department: MetalSucks.net has busted out a truly smoking new video by Daath, showing new singer Sean Z. in all his Andrew W.K.-looking glory. The site is also giving away tix to the band’s tour with Goatwhore and other adorable aggro artists.
